Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

It is a benign condition where males develop ‘female-like’ chests of varying sizes. It is a condition associated with much psychological stress and the majority of males looking for surgery and wish to get a solution for this condition to restore their self-confidence. Sometimes they are so stressed by this condition that it limits their day to day activities like going out with friends, not being able to wear the clothes they desire, restricting outdoor activities etc.

Gynecomastia treatment surgery is becoming increasingly popular because of the surgery being available as a minimally invasive technique which leads to decrease in the downtime and get a more contoured and firm look of the chest

Many males who suffer from ‘man boobs’ or gynecomastia actually have battled with the condition for quite a long time before visiting the plastic surgeon. Many suffer from this condition almost since puberty and seek consultation from the doctor only when they are adults or in their twenties.

There are many causes that have been outlined for gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can be caused by common medications, anabolic steroids, natural or synthetic estrogen hormone derivatives, herbal or growth supplements, marijuana (Gaanja), alcohol abuse, chronic liver failure, renal failure and Obesity. A thorough medical history is taken in the consultation with the plastic surgeon so that the appropriate measures can be taken to get results in the most effective manner after the procedure.

Occasionally it may be prudent for pubertal boys to wait and watch for the condition to regress on its own. However, the majority of boys and men wanting to get an effective solution, they will have to resort to surgery because the advantage is that this minimally invasive procedure offers is really tremendous.

Our Service

How Male Chest Reduction in Gurgaon is to be done?

Procedure

The procedure called ‘male chest reduction surgery’ involves undergoing a surgical procedure that utilizes the procedure of liposuction and removal of excess glands to get a ‘flat chest’ appearance. The liposuction is performed through small keyholes and excess chest tissue left after liposuction is removed by the small incision that is well concealed in the areola. Occasionally with Grade I Gynecomastia, the only liposuction may be sufficient and areolar incision may not be needed.

Length

The duration of the procedure may range from one and a half to three hours for higher grades.

Anesthesia

Either general anesthesia is used or intravenous sedation and local anesthesia are used. Patient safety is our highest priority.

Inpatient/Outpatient

It is an outpatient procedure in the majority of the cases, the patients go back to their homes the same day of the surgery after being observed in the clinic for few hours after the procedure under the guidance of the concerned surgeon. If performed under local anesthesia one may leave shortly after the procedure.

Possible Side Effects

Bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, and/or burning sensation are possible. All of these are temporary side effects.

Risks

The risks may involve the development of a fluid collection under the skin (seroma) which may need to be sucked out with the help of a syringe.

Injury to the skin

The looseness of the skin which does not drape back is possible with very advanced cases and scarring may occur if the skin needs to be removed.

Asymmetry

Asymmetry is possible after the procedure which is correctable if the patient is too stressed about it.

Infection

Loss of nipple sensation may occur which usually recovers in the long term.
Rarely, a second procedure to remove additional tissue is required.

Recovery

A compression garment is required to be worn after the procedure for a period of about four weeks to lessen the discomfort and help the skin to re-drape to the chest contours. Strenuous activities need to be restricted for few weeks after the procedure.

Results

Results can be augmented with the proper diet and exercises, although significant or massive weight gain may cause the chest area to once again become larger. Visit Dr. Sivakumar, Gynecomastia doctor in Coimbatore for desired results.
